The Revival of a Legend: Yves Saint Laurent's House and Garden in Marrakesh

By Zhandarbek Sarsebayev

Dreams come true! I visited the Majorelle Garden and House of the great Yves Saint Laurent in Marrakesh! The house and garden of Majorelle were literally "revived" from ruins in 1980 when they were acquired by the famous French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner and patron, Pierre Bergé. The Arab-Moorish villa of Majorelle and its garden were given a second life.

Bergé established a foundation, gradually restoring the legendary artist's garden and its plant collection. The house gained a new "sound" and flair. The renowned couturier often retreated to his villa for creative inspiration or solitude, where he collected fabrics with African and Berber motifs, small sculptures, and ceramics. This unique collection of Yves Saint Laurent formed the basis of the modern Museum of Berber and African Art, located within the old house of Jacques Majorelle. The creativity and very name of Yves Saint Laurent are forever linked with the Kingdom of Morocco and the Berber capital, Marrakesh, as his ashes are scattered right in the middle of the Majorelle Garden in its rose garden. The Majorelle Garden is often referred to as the "Yves Saint Laurent Garden in Marrakesh."
