Calouste Gulbenkian (1869 in Istanbul, 1955 in Lisbon) built up a collection throughout his life (more than 6,000 pieces, his "children") like a large cabinet of curiosities open to all civilizations (Ancient Egypt, Greece, Antiquity, Persia, Islamic arts, arts of Europe and Japan...) from antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century. He will have chosen only the best. The Hôtel de la Marine, Al Thani collection, which shares an approach and a conception similar to that of Calouste Gulbenkian (diversity, from Antiquity to the present day, from the East to the West, always choosing quality, Artistic merit and provenance reveal an anthology of this other collection.In addition to the rooster tiara by René Lalique (circa 1897-1898), eyes will be drawn to a terrine by the great goldsmith François Thomas Germain, commissioned by Elisabeth 1st, Empress of Russia, from 'a pair of "Fo dogs" (China Qing period) a lacquered bous cabinet from Japan (Edo period), a bottle with a Chinese lion (Egypt or Syria, Mamluk period), a wild duck from Albrechr Dürer (circa 1502 or 1512) or even a Potpourri (China, Qing dynasty)... and many other treasures.
