Ballet «Mephistopheles. The Obsessions of Faust» on the stage of the Jambyl Kazakh State Academic Philharmonic

Балет «Мефистофель. Наваждения Фауста» на сцене Государственной филармонии им. Жамбыла

On February 17, the ballet "Mephistopheles. The Obsessions of Faust" will be performed on the stage of The Jambyl Kazakh State Academic Philharmonic - a one-act production created by the outstanding Kazakhstani choreographer Bulat Ayukhanov. It was inspired by the legendary tragedy of Johann Wolfgang Goethe "Faust", and the musical accompaniment was taken from the opera by Charles Gounod. This production is a philosophical parable about human weakness, the eternal search for the meaning of life and the irresistible power of temptation.

17 февраля на сцене Государственной филармонии им. Жамбыла пройдет балет «Мефистофель. Наваждения Фауста» – одноактная постановка, созданная выдающимся казахстанским хореографом Булатом Аюхановым. Вдохновением для него послужила легендарная трагедия Иоганна Вольфганга Гёте «Фауст», а музыкальное сопровождение взято из оперы Шарля Гуно. Эта постановка – философская притча о человеческой слабости, вечном поиске смысла жизни и непреодолимой власти соблазна.

The story of Faust is a classic myth about a man who strives for unlimited knowledge, power and pleasure, but pays for it with his own soul. In Ayukhanov’s ballet, the emphasis is not only on the struggle between good and evil, but also on the subtleties of illusion and reality, which Mephistopheles masterfully manipulates. The main character, tired of the meaninglessness of scientific research and old age, accepts the offer of the insidious demon - to return his youth in exchange for his soul. But instead of true happiness, he plunges into a series of obsessions: love for the young Margarita turns out to be as deceptive as Mephistopheles’ promises. Illusions collapse, and for short moments of pleasure one has to pay with eternity. 

История Фауста – это классический миф о человеке, который стремится к безграничным знаниям, власти и наслаждению, но расплачивается за это собственной душой. В балете Аюханова акцент делается не только на борьбу добра и зла, но и на тонкие грани иллюзий и реальности, которыми мастерски манипулирует Мефистофель. Главный герой, уставший от бессмысленности научных изысканий и старости, принимает предложение коварного демона – вернуть молодость в обмен на свою душу. Но вместо истинного счастья он погружается в череду наваждений: любовь к юной Маргарите оказывается столь же обманчивой, как и обещания Мефистофеля. Иллюзии рушатся, а за короткие мгновения наслаждения приходится платить вечностью.

Bulat Ayukhanov is an iconic figure in the world of Kazakhstani ballet, an innovator who managed to combine the academic rigor of the classical school with the expressiveness of modern choreography in his productions. In Mephistopheles, he creates an atmosphere of mystical anxiety, using sharp contrasts of movements: Faust’s plasticity conveys his internal struggle, while Mephistopheles’ choreography is the embodiment of impeccable calculation and devilish cunning. The harmonious combination of Gounod's music and choreographic solutions makes the performance cinematic: scenes change like frames of a silent film, full of expression and drama.

Булат Аюханов – знаковая фигура в мире казахстанского балета, новатор, который сумел соединить в своих постановках академическую строгость классической школы с экспрессивностью современной хореографии. В «Мефистофеле» он создает атмосферу мистической тревожности, используя резкие контрасты движений: пластика Фауста передает его внутреннюю борьбу, в то время как хореография Мефистофеля – воплощение безупречного расчета и дьявольского коварства. Гармоничное сочетание музыки Гуно и хореографических решений делает спектакль кинематографичным: сцены сменяются подобно кадрам немого кино, насыщенного экспрессией и драматизмом.

The premiere of the performance took place in 2011 and was warmly received by the public and entered the Golden Fund of the dance theater. On stage, this ballet looks like a real hypnotic ritual, in which the viewer becomes not just an observer, but a participant in the spiritual choice of the hero. This is a work that can make you think: has each of us already made our own Faustian pact? "Mephistopheles. The Obsessions of Faust" is not just a ballet, but a reflection on choice, temptation and the price of instant pleasure. Bulat Ayukhanov is not afraid to ask the viewer difficult questions, and that is why his art remains relevant, alive and truly magical. 

Премьера спектакля состоялась в 2011 году и была тепло принята публикой и вошла в Золотой фонд театра танца. На сцене этот балет выглядит как настоящий гипнотический ритуал, в котором зритель становится не просто наблюдателем, но участником духовного выбора героя. Это произведение, способное заставить задуматься: а не заключил ли каждый из нас уже свой собственный фаустовский договор? «Мефистофель. Наваждения Фауста» – это не просто балет, а размышление о выборе, искушении и цене мгновенного удовольствия. Булат Аюханов не боится задавать зрителю сложные вопросы, и именно поэтому его искусство остается актуальным, живым и по-настоящему магическим.

In the second part of the ballet evening, the audience will see classical miniatures from the legendary ballet productions “The Nutcracker”, “Don Quixote”, “Sleeping Beauty” and the Hooligan variation from the ballet “The Young Lady and the Hooligan”.
