Interview: Vyacheslav Okunev on the open day in Abay Opera House dedicated to the new production of Verdi's «La Traviata»

On June 7 we visited the open day in Abay Opera House dedicated to the new production of Verdi's «La Traviata». We felt the atmosphere backstage theatre life, witnessed the «La Traviata» opera rehearsals and visited the makeup and wardrobe department. Opera as a special genre strongly focused on listening music, singing, word, stage action, decoration to bring empathy, emotion response.

7 июня мы посетили день открытых дверей в ГАТОБ им. Абая, приуроченный к новой постановке оперы Дж. Верди «Травиата». Мы ощутили атмосферу закулисной жизни театра, стали свидетелями репетиции оперы «Травиата», посетили гримерный и костюмерный цеха. Опера, как особый жанр, мощно направлена на слушателя музыкой, пением, словом, сценическим действием, художественным оформлением для того, чтобы вызвать сопереживание, ответные эмоции.

Giuseppe Verdi's opera «La Traviata» exists on the world opera stages since 1853, since its first presentation at the theater La Fenice in Venice. In Kazakhstan, this opera was first presented on Abay Opera House stage in 1938.  This is an opera that touched to tears cult heroine Julia Roberts in the movie «Pretty Woman», this is the opera music from that least once in life heard everyone. The basis of the libretto of the opera «La Traviata» was based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas' «La Dame aux Camelias». Lifeline heroine Marguerite Gautier and the heroine of the opera «La Traviata» Violetta Valéry in many events repeats what happened in real life, the famous demi-monde Marie Duplessis, distinguished not only by outstanding beauty, but also the practicality and the mind. Life and real life on the pages of the novel intertwined, complementing each other. Marie lived only twenty-three years. If it had not been written the opera «La Traviata», the story is likely to be forgotten over time. It said Dumas, who attended the premiere of the opera in Paris: «Fifty years later, no one would have thought of my «Lady of the Camellias», but Verdi made it immortal».

Опера Джузеппе Верди «Травиата» существует на мировых оперных сценах с 1853 года, с момента первого ее представления на сцене театра Ля Фениче в Венеции. В Казахстане эта опера впервые была представлена на сцене ГАТОБ им. Абая в 1938 году. Это именно та самая опера, которая до слез растрогала культовую героиню Джулии Робертс из фильма «Красотка», та, музыку из которой хоть раз в жизни слышал каждый, даже очень далекий от искусства человек. В основу либретто оперы «Травиата»  была положена драма Александра Дюма–сына «Дама с камелиями». Линия жизни героини романа Маргариты Готье и героини оперы «Травиата» Виолетты Валери во многих событиях повторяет то, что происходило в реальной жизни знаменитой дамы полусвета Мари Дюплесси, отличавшейся не только незаурядной красотой, но и практичностью и умом. Жизнь реальная и жизнь на страницах романа переплелись, дополняя друг друга. Прожила Мари всего двадцать три года. Если бы не была написана опера «Травиата», то история эта, скорее всего, забылась бы со временем. Об  этом сказал Дюма, присутствовавший на премьере оперы в Париже: «Через пятьдесят лет никто и не вспомнил бы о моей «Даме с камелиями», но Верди обессмертил ее».

After the rehearsal, we could ask production designer Vyacheslav Okunev, which is the People's Artist of Russia, laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, about what to expect from the new production.

После репетиции мы смогли узнать у художника-постановщика Вячеслава Окунева, который является Народным художником России, Лауреатом Государственной премии РК, о том, что ожидать от новой постановки.

«It was a task to make a detailed, emotional, realistic spectacle which tells the story of our words, because the director had a lot of their decisions. This is not my first «La Traviata», but here, for the Abay Opera House, we decided to make a unique, nice performance. Very precisely made decorations, the interior of the 19th century, there are great masters, they sewed more than 150 costumes for this performance, the costumes are all different from each other, have different finishes, silhouette, color solutions».

«Была задача сделать подробный, эмоциональный, реалистичный спектакль, который рассказывает эту историю нашими словами, потому что у режиссера много своих решений. Это не первое мое обращение к «Травиате», но здесь, для Алматинского театра оперы и балета им. Абая, мы решили сделать своеобразный, добротный спектакль. Очень точно сделаны декорации, воссоздан интерьер 19 века, здесь замечательные мастера, они сшили более 150 костюмов к этому спектаклю, они все отличаются друг от друга, имеют разную отделку, силуэт, цветовые решения».

«Opera is a genre that stops our fast the reality, because now all rushing in connection with the informative technology, Internet. A person rests in the opera, in my opinion - it's almost a sense of the museum, where you can stay for the evening, listen to a huge orchestra, singers with brilliant vocal, to see the spectacle».

«Опера – это такой жанр, который останавливает нашу быструю действительность, ведь сейчас все несется в связи с информативными технологиями, интернетом. А в опере человек отдыхает, на мой взгляд - это почти музейное ощущение, когда можно остановиться на вечер, послушать огромный оркестр, певцов с блестящими вокальными данными, увидеть зрелище».

«La Traviata» I did eight times in the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg, in Belgrade, in the Moldavian Theatre of Opera and Ballet, by the way, in Belgrade was a modern version. I cannot say that I did not use anything from the previous version, such as a suit of Violetta from the second picture, I really like it and I repeated it. When is the new edition, improved the previous version. And all backgrounds made especially for Abay Opera House».

«Травиату» я делал 8 раз, в Михайловском театре в Санкт-Петербурге, в Белграде, в Молдавском театре оперы и балета, кстати, в Белграде была современная версия. Я не могу сказать, чтобы я не использовал что-то из предыдущих версий, например костюм Виолетты из второй картины мне очень нравится, и я его повторил. Когда делается новая редакция, улучшается предыдущие версии. А все фоны сделаны специально для ГАТОБа».

Vyacheslav Okunev since 1975 carried out more than 300 productions as a production designer. Over the years, he has collaborated with the Royal Theatre Glasgow, the Greek National Opera, Theatre Wielki in Poland, the National Opera of Hungary (Budapest), the National Theatre in Seoul and Tokyo, New York City Ballet, the Opera of Cagliari. Performances with registration by Okunev went to the scenes of the opera La Scala, the Arena di Verona in Italy, and others.

Вячеслав Окунев  с 1975 года осуществил более 300 постановок в качестве художника-постановщика. В разные годы он сотрудничал с Королевским театром Глазго, Национальной Оперой Греции, театром Велки в Польше, Национальной оперой Венгрии (Будапешт), Национальными театрами Сеула и Токио, Нью-Йорк Сити Балетом, Оперой Кальяри. Спектакли с оформлением Окунева шли на сценах оперы Ла Скала, Арена ди Верона в Италии и др.
