You live abroad, but you came to publish your book in Kazakhstan, did you want children in your homeland to become the first readers?

“Undoubtedly, it was important for me to start a new chapter in my life in my hometown of Almaty. When I presented my book, I was very pleased to see so many smiles on the faces of the children after reading The Pink Mask, and I really enjoyed signing each book. After the presentation, I visited city schools and kindergartens to read the book, talk about the problems of the global ocean and draw a scary Garbage Monster, as well as beautiful mermaids with the children. Thanks to the support of my friends and the work of Almaty volunteers, more than 100 books were donated to low-income and large families, children with cancer and children with down syndrome on the eve of the New Year. It was important for me to make my own, albeit small, contribution to our society. The next step is translation into English and publication in Dubai, then we'll see. People are already asking about the book in many other countries, and it pleases.”

Вы живете заграницей, но приехали издавать свою книгу в Казахстан, хотели, чтобы на родине дети стали первыми читателями?

«Несомненно, для меня важно было начать новую главу своей жизни в моем родном городе Алматы. Когда я представила свою книгу, мне было очень приятно видеть столько улыбок на лицах деток после прочтения «Розовой Маски», и мне очень понравилось подписывать каждую книжку. После презентации я посещала городские школы и садики, чтобы прочитать книгу, поговорить о проблемах всемирного океана и рисовать страшного Мусоро-Монстра, а также красивых русалок вместе с детьми. Благодаря поддержке моих друзей и работе Алматинских волонтеров, более 100 книг были подарены малообеспеченным и многодетным семьям, деткам с онколигией и детям с синдромом дауна в предверии Нового Года. Для меня было важно сделать свой, хоть и небольшой, вклад в наше общество. Следующий шаг - перевод на английский и публикация в Дубай, дальше будет видно. Про книжку уже спрашивают и во многих других странах, и это радует».

How did you get the idea to write a book?

“I love the sea very much, many vivid impressions are associated with it - blue whales in Sri Lanka, a flock of rays in the Maldives, a whale shark in the waters of Oman and the first dives with reef sharks in the United Arab Emirates. I have been diving all over the world for many years and I see both the bright and colorful underwater world, as well as garbage dumps and plastic pollution. The idea to write a book was born during quarantine - like many others, I began to think even more about the influence of an individual person on nature. The anti-hero of the book is a terrible Garbage Monster that enslaves the ocean, which poisons the water, traps sea animals in nets and feeds them plastic instead of food. With this book, I wanted to draw the attention of both children and their parents to the problems of the ocean.”

Как пришла идея написать книгу?

«Я очень люблю море, множество ярких впечатлений связано с ним - синие киты на Шри-Ланке, cтая скатов на Мальдивах, китовая акула в водах Омана и первые погружения с рифовыми акулами в Арабских Эмиратах. Я уже много лет ныряю по всему миру и вижу, как и яркий и красочный подводный мир, так и свалки мусора и пластиковое загрязнение. Идея написать книгу родилась во время карантина - как и многие, я стала еще больше задумываться о влиянии отдельного человека на природу. Антигерой книги - ужасный Мусоро-Монстр, порабощающий океан, который отравляет воду, ловит морских зверей в сетки и скармливает им пластик вместо еды. Этой книгой я хотела привлечь внимание и детей и их родителей к проблемам нашего океана».

Why did you write a children's book and not something for adults?

“Children are our future, and as Cousteau said: “We protect what we love.” I really hope that children will be imbued with love and pity for the heroes and will be more careful about the ocean and its inhabitants, as well as our resources. When I read the book in kindergartens and schools, I spend a lot of time discussing the problems with plastic and asking the children what each of them can do to improve the situation. The Pink Mask is the start of an important dialogue that should happen more often in today's world."

Почему Вы написали детскую книгу, а не что-то для взрослых?

«Дети-наше будущее, и, как сказал Кусто: «Мы защищаем то, что любим». Я очень надеюсь, что дети проникнутся любовью и жалостью к героям и будут более бережно относиться к океану и его обитателям, а также нашим ресурсам. Когда и читаю книгу в детских садах и школах, я уделяю большое время обсуждению проблем с пластиком и спрашиваю детей, что может сделать каждый из них, чтобы улкчшить ситуацию. «Розовая маска» - начало важного диалога, который должен происходить чаще в современном мире».

Why is the main character a girl?

"Good question. On the one hand, this story is very biographical, and everyone who knows me recognized me in little Ula. On the other hand, I wanted to create an antidote to the fairy tales on which I myself grew up. I'm sure we don't want to raise girls on fairy tales anymore, in which princesses just have to be beautiful, sit quietly and still in the tower and wait for the prince to save her. It is absolutely irrelevant today. Ula is brave and kind and, despite her fears, she goes forward and helps those who need her. I look at my six-year-old niece Adriana, who quit ballet for taekwondo - she doesn't like princesses, but she loves animals and active sports. This book is for her and all the girls who will write their own history, while not forgetting about the world around them.”

Почему главный герой именно девочка?

«Хороший вопрос. С одной стороны, эта история очень биографична, и все, кто меня знают, узнали в маленькой Уле меня. С другой стороны, хотелось создать антидот сказкам на которых выросла я сама. Я уверена, мы больше не хотим растить девочек на сказках, в которых принцессам нужно быть просто красивой, сидеть тихо и смирно в башне и ждать, пока ее спасет принц. Это абсолютно неактуально сегодня. Ула - смелая и добрая и, несмотря на свои страхи, она идет вперед и помогает тем, кто в ней нуждается. Я смотрю на свою шестилетнюю племянницу Адриану, которая бросила балет для таэквондо - она не любит принцесс, но очень любит животных и активный спорт. Эта книга для нее и всех девочек, кто будет сам писать свою историю, не забывая при этом и об окружающем мире».

Is a good ending possible not only in the book, but for the oceans?

“I would like to believe that if we start to be more careful about marine resources, both at the state level and at the personal level, then we will be able to preserve the health of the world's oceans. The main threats are global warming, overfishing, pollution and the loss of marine biodiversity. To find answers to these problems, it is important to ask the right questions. It all starts with awareness and willingness to contribute, rather than expecting the state to do everything. Each of us can reduce the use of plastic, separate waste and be a more conscious consumer in general.”

Возможен ли хороший конец не только в книге, а для мирового океана?

«Хочется верить, что если мы начнем более бережно относиться к морским ресурсам, как и на уровне государств, так и на личном уровне, то мы сможем сохранить здоровье мирового океана. Главную угрозу представляют глобальное потепление, чрезмерный вылов рыбы, загрязнение и сокращение морского биоразнообразия. Чтобы найти ответы на решение этих проблем, важно задавать правильные вопросы. Все начинается с осведомленности и желания внести свой вклад, а не ожидать что все сделает государство. Каждый из нас может сократить использование пластика, разделять мусор и быть более осознанным потребителем в целом».

Are there any plans to write a story proposal about the brave Ula?

“Undoubtedly. There are many ideas and such a positive response to the book inspires me even more to create a sequel. As a diver, I have a lot of interesting stories in my personal piggy bank, and close contact with marine biologists and underwater photographers helps to keep the focus on important issues.”

Есть ли в планах написать предложение истории про храбрую Улу?

«Несомненно. Есть множество идей и такой позитивный отклик на книгу еще больше вдохновляет меня на создание продолжения. В моей личной копилке дайвера много интересных историй, а близкое общение с морскими биологами и подводными фотографами помогает держать фокус на важных проблемах».

I know that you are diving, what is so interesting underwater?

“Divers often joke that an ordinary person owns only a third of the planet-land, and the whole world belongs to us. From the very first dive about 15 years ago, I fell in love with this colorful world. The underwater world is full of the most stunning landscapes and the most unusual inhabitants - from the smallest crabs and fish to giant blue whales. Now I am engaged in normal diving and technical diving, which allows you to dive to depths below forty meters. Freediving holds a special place in my heart - diving while holding your breath. So I feel like I'm part of the ocean, without the noise of scuba bubbles, alone with the blue water and myself.”

Я знаю, что Вы занимаетесь дайвингом, что же такого интересного под водой?

«Дайверы часто шутят, что обычному человеку принадлежит только треть планеты-суша, а нам весь мир. С самого первого погружения около 15 лет назад я влюбилась в этот красочный мир. Подводный мир полон самых потрясающих пейзажей и самых необычных обитателей- от самых маленьких крабиков и рыбешек, до гигантских синих китов. Сейчас я занимаюсь обычным дайвингом и техническим, который позволяет погружаться на глубины ниже сорока метров. Особое место в моем сердце занимает фридайвинг - ныряние на задержке дыхания. Так я чувствую себя частью океана, без шума пузырей из акваланга, наедине с синевой воды м самой собой».
