75 pieces of furniture and works of art, 75 masterpieces, this is what the Jacques Garcia Timeless sale, Château de Champ de Bataille, his "Norman Versailles" is offering at Sotheby's on May 16, 2023. The French decorator, with a masterfully sharp taste first by his father, a bargain hunter at the Vannes or Montreuil flea market and his regular attendance at museums, exhibitions or visits to public and private residences, then by his encounters with Marie de Beyrie who taught him the art of juxtaposing styles , with the collector Jean Pétrin, his model, parted with a few objects out of the 20,000 (including 15,000 books) that had taken refuge in the castle, so as not to let the most personal work of his life disappear. Instead of marrying styles and eras as he does so well for his private clients such as the Sultan in Brunei or when renovating places such as the Hôtel de la Mamounia in Marrakech or La Réserve in Paris, when he creates for on his own, he seeks historical truth. In 1980, he tackled the restoration and redecoration of the Hôtel de Sagonne in Paris built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, First Architect to Louis XIV (which made him known to the general public). In 1992, he acquired the Château de Champ de Bataille, the work of Louis Le Vau, with gardens designed by Le Nôtre. For 30 years, he revived this Grand Siècle residence (exceptional objects and furniture often of royal provenance) creating a 45-hectare garden embellishing it with Chinese and Indian follies. Today it is time to worry about the continuation of where this sale which will feed the fund of endowment of the future foundation which will manage the field.

So, let us be seduced by this pair of sublime cabinets in Japanese lacquer and silver mounts from the Edo period, the Weisweiler console in ebony veneer, belt in black lacquered sheet metal and top in marble marquetry - one of the last orders from Marie Antoinette, these two armchairs by Alexandre Bellangé with bronze mounts by Jean-Jacques Feuchère (circa 1840), one of which seems to come from the Rothschid collection and the other from that of the Duc d'Orléans or from the same designer these two cabinets with hard stone panels. You can also dream and even more in front of the 175 pieces of the Sèvres service decorated with Buffon's birds or this pair of Lagrenée vases that belonged to Alexandre Hamilton. The look jumps from piece to piece ever more amazed under the tender eye of a small crystal parrot decorated according to a Mongolian work.
