The way of Legend

Kenzo Takada was born in Japan and from childhood he showed interest in sewing women's clothing and loved fashion. In 1964, he graduated from the Tokyo school of fashion designers, and in 1965, by a lucky chance, he moved to Paris, which he had dreamed of for a long time. The first years he lived in poverty, rented a small room in Montmartre and worked. He didn’t miss a single show of Dior, Chanel and Cardin.

On April 14, 1970, the first show of the designer «Destruction of Haute Couture» took place in Paris. Takada unveiled a line of ethnic-inspired denim for women. The clothes were saturated with floral ornaments, a cage, a strip, it seemed that everything that was incongruous was perfectly combined together. He was the first in Europe to introduce vibrant elements of Japanese culture into clothing design, where fashionistas of the 70s became accustomed to a gray-blue color palette. Also, for the first time, loose-fitting clothes were created, which outwardly resembled a wide kimono. This approach to fashion design was innovative and instantly caught the attention of a fashionable audience. The show itself passed quietly, without much enthusiasm, the number of visitors was about 50 people.

Immediately after the show in 1970, the designer opens his first own store in Paris, called «Jungle Jap». The fashion designer loved to create whole representations of his shows, which aroused the genuine interest of the fashionable public. In 1971, the Kenzo brand was introduced in Tokyo and New York. His models began to appear on the covers of magazines, and the fashionable public was constantly gossiping about his bold images.

Takada knew how to surprise the audience: in 1978, at one of the shows, the designer went to bow on an elephant, and the podium itself was in the form of a circus arena.

In 1983, the Kenzo men's clothing line was launched. So the famous Kenzo suit - striped trousers with elegant floral jackets - conquered the men's world of fashion. In the same year, a Kenzo boutique was opened in New York. And in 1987, a children's clothing line was launched for little fashionistas and fashionistas.

The coming year 1999 was marked by the departure of Takado Kenzo from the post of the chief director of the Kenzo fashion house. The designer himself found a replacement - the Dane Roy Krayberg, who was responsible for the production of the men's clothing line, and the Frenchman Gilles Rosier, who specialized in the production of women's clothing. In the entire history of being in the post of chief fashion designer, Takada has never been involved in a scandal. In the same year, for his services, he was awarded the Time for Peace Award, which was given to a fashion designer for the first time.
