Interview: Venera Isina

Timeless classics - Kazakh national costume

Written by Alina Sarsenova

The Kazakh national costume is incredibly beautiful, but it is not easy to create it, because it is based on a very complex, unusual decor. To get it, you need to use embroidery, edging, braid and much more. In addition, ancestors did not skimp on the decoration, not only on solemn occasions, judge for yourself: bright, saturated colors, juicy shades such as emerald, red, gold, deep blue. And Venera Isina, the head of the Nurasem fashion house, has been specializing in the national dress for almost 20 years. By the way, even presidents wear her shapans. About this, as well as about how it all began in the dashing 90s, we talked with Venera Isina.

Tell us about your business. How did you get started?

«In the early nineties, I decided to try myself in a new business, to open my own company for sewing national clothes, which was not then in our region. In Karaganda, in our apartment, we started working with five used sewing machines, which I bought from the Abai sewing factory. I invited experienced seamstresses who, from the first days, began to actively cut, sew and embroider shapans. My right hand was my sister Svetlana Isina, who, in order to support me, quit her job in medicine and became responsible for the production part of the company. In 1993 we officially registered as the Nursem company. The first large orders were for the 325th anniversary of Bukhar Zhyrau and from the Karkarali region, then we began to work with all regions to sew not only shapans and camisoles, but also national stage costumes».

Why did you decide to be true to traditions, to be engaged in our national dress?

«My mother was an ideal needlewoman, since childhood I saw how she sewed shapans, camisoles, even my mother embroidered corpses with multi-colored ornaments and much more. So, being still a little girl, thanks to my mother, I fell in love with Kazakh patterns, ornaments, clothes. Today this is not only my favorite business, but also my daughter Nurgul, her 6-year-old daughter Laysan also wants to become a designer, draws patterns, so that love for national clothes and loyalty to national traditions is passed down from generation to generation, to which I am very glad. In our production we use such fabrics as natural silk, nylon, velor, velvet».

Is it true that our President and the President of Turkey wear your shapans?

«I can't say for sure whether they wear them or not, but I know that our shapans were presented to them, it's true».

What models are most popular with young people?

«Girls like national capes and vests, while guys prefer national costumes in the office style».

Tell us about how you prepare national style bridal outfits.

«I would divide them into two parts: outfits for Kyz Uzatu (seeing off the bride) and for the wedding itself. We are ordered or rented ready-made costumes for these two events. Dresses, vests or camisoles of light colors are ordered or taken on Kyz Uzatu; crowns, beautifully decorated with stones, are preferred from headdresses. For the wedding, mainly dresses, vest or camisole, white saukele (the national wedding headdress of the bride) are chosen. Patterns and ornaments for costumes are embroidered or decorated with stones and rhinestones. Sometimes we are ordered a dress with a cape, on which an embroidered ornament is required. Our craftsmen know how to do all this beautifully, each pattern is almost impossible to repeat».

How did you work during the quarantine and the global crisis?

«Before that, we had signed contracts for sewing national costumes and clothes for the stage, we fulfilled them, and we also received an order for 10,000 masks from the polyclinics of Karaganda, which we fulfilled on time. In addition, already on my initiative, we have sewn thousands more masks for pensioners for charitable purposes».
